TalkingDesktop Review
TalkingDesktop is a voice recognition software that comes with interactive avatar. TalkingDesktop is a product of Abasoft Corporation. The software lets user to dictate and turn words into text with up to 99% accuracy, command computer, surf the web by voice, run programs by name, and much more.
TalkingDesktop is available for Windows 7, Vista and XP. There is no trial version available to download. User can buy the software as CD version or download version.
TalkingDesktop Highlight Features:
- Dictation – Lets user dictate text into almost any Windows application such as Word, Word Pad , Notepad, Excel, Internet Explorer America Online, WordPerfect, Microsoft Office Application, Email, Hotmail, Juno, Lotus Notes, Yahoo, MS Outlook or Express, Eudora, PowerPoint, GoldMine, Microsoft Works, Instant Messenger, ICQ, AOL , MSN Messenger. User can also dictate text into any input field that they can type into.
- Internet Voice Web Browser – This lets user surf the web by voice. For example, they can navigate the internet by saying “text link names”, bookmark web sites by saying “Bookmark” and display web sites by name, say “CNN web site” to display that web site, or use voice commands such as Up, Down, Page Down or Page Up to move around each web page. User can also tell it to read a web page or say “Browser” to open the voice web browser.
- Emerging Awareness – It can greet user with “Hello John it’s 6:30″. It can also activate a hibernating computer monitor and independently retrieve the latest weather map for user’s region.
- Natural Text-to-Speech – Comes with different voices that the user can select from. Further control of how the computer talks is available with commands such as “talk faster”, “talk louder”, “talk slower”.
- Lookup Google News – Lets user use their voice to research breaking Google news stories on the internet. These web sites can then be bookmarked for later study.
- Main Menu – It comes with desktop ring that presents user with some of the most frequent commands and requests that they can say to interact with their computer. This Main Menu Ring will shrink to the top corner of user’s desktop when not needed or say “desktop”.
- Run Programs by Voice Name – Lets user launch applications and programs by voice names they create.
- Internet Information Retrieval – Lets user request information by voice command “Weather”. Or say “Caribbean weather” to see a radar map of developing hurricanes in the Caribbean.
- Voice Named Web Cameras – Lets user display web cameras by name. For example, say “New York Markets” and a graph of the Dow Jones and NASDAQ markets is displayed.
- News Headlines – Lets user ask to have the news read out-loud as it is updated or whenever they desire. User may ask for just “World News” or “Sports News” to be read out-loud.
- Ask for Contacts by Name – Say “Contacts” and a list of user’s friends or business contacts are displayed with associated information, address and phone#. Say the name of a person or company and the computer will lookup the contact.
- Customized Conversation – The software supports personalized conversation creation so that the computer will respond with specific speech when a certain word or phrase is heard. For example, user can setup the software to say “water is a liquid and wet” when it hears the word “water”.
- Speech Recognition – It supports multiple speech profiles so everyone in the household can speak to the computer and the software dynamically adapts to a users’ speech during operation. The software will tell the user when they are speaking too rapidly or too loudly.
- Voice Confirmation – It can repeat back out-loud to the user, each word or phrase that the speech recognition engine hears. When a user is unable to see the monitor, the software can repeat out-loud the speech recognition that it is hearing as it listens to the user.
- Responds Verbally To Confirm User Commands – For example, after asking the program to follow a voice browser page “text link”, TalkingDesktop will respond out-loud with got it and then proceed to the linked web page. The software issues verbal feedback to the user whenever possible.
- Flavors of English Recognized – The speech recognition engine will adapt to American, Australian, Canadian and British speakers of English.
- Multiple User Voice Profiles – It can be setup to accommodate a variety of users on the same computer.
- Program Startup – After user starts the program from the windows desktop icon, Talking Desktop will do the rest, present the internet connection window to user, retrieve the latest news headlines or favorite opening weather map.
- No Fuss Shutdown – Say ‘Shutdown Program’ and it will close all open windows, turn itself off and then shutdown user’s computer.
- Barge-in Politeness – This makes user’s interaction with their computer more enjoyable as they can interrupt the program from reading long passages of text or news stories which they do not want to hear.
- Vocabulary – User can customize the vocabulary with words and names that they use every day. There is an 100,000 word vocabulary and the number of words that they can add is unlimited. They can add, change, remove, or alter the pronunciation of words in the vocabulary.
- Initiate Assistance – Talking Desktop has the ability to initiate basic assistance such as asking user to connect to the Internet or review stock alerts.
- Text-to-Speech Co-Existence – The character voices will not interfere with other programs with text-to-speech voices on user’s computer.

I have tried several times trying to get the Talkingdesktop software to work on my HP touchsmart 600 system running Windows 7. Their support has been good however there is still no solution to the problems I am experiencing.
