Complete Resume Format, Form and Layout

Resume Format

There is no one right way to put a resume together – there are many different formats that are considered acceptable in the business world. Which one you use depends on your experience and the type of job you want. A resume is a summary typically limited to one or two pages of size A4 or Letter-size highlighting only those experiences and credentials that the author considers most relevant to the desired position. The following is a blank resume form which consists of all components. This will provides the ideas on what can be included in resume. There are two commonly used resume formats: chronological resume and functional resume.

Summary [Briefly describe the best elements of your resume including your Experiences, Accomplishments, Abilities, Skills and so on.]

Resume Layout

In the following, you will find out: explanation on how to write each resume sections; example, tips and guide to write an effective one.

1. Heading

In the heading section of the resume, you need to include:

  • [Your name]
  • [Street Address], [City, ST ZIP Code]
  • [Phone Number]
  • [Email Address]

Heading Example

  • JOHN ROSE
  • 1234, Los Angeles, CA 90041
  • (123)-456 ####
  • johnrose@isoftwarereviews.com

Tips: Your name should be in ALL CAPS to make it stand out. And the font size should not exceed 16 points. In addition, different name (including short and long) may not always look good in ALL CAPS. Be flexible.

2. Objective

[Describe your career goal or ideal job that you are applying for.]

Write a statement of job title or career field you are applying for in one or two lines. It can be specific job title or more general career.

  • Write specific job title (if you are applying for a specific position.)
  • Write specific industry (if you are applying for a variety of positions.)

Objective Statement Example:

Seeking a Software Manager position requiring advanced management knowledge to improve the company operations.

Tips: Objective statement is recommended to include in your resume if you are know the position you are applying for.

3. Summary

[Briefly describe the best elements of your resume including your Experiences, Accomplishments, Abilities, Skills and so on.]

Usually, Summary and Objective sections are not included in resume at the same time. Most professional and executives prefer using Summary Statement instead of Objective.

Summary Statement Example:

Successful financial planning professional with over 15 years of personal and retirement planning experience. Managed a small financial planning firm, achieving double-digit financial returns for all clients by developing personalized investment portfolios. Leader in development and professional growth of four other financial planners in the firm through effective and motivating mentoring strategies.

Tips: Summary statement works for the professional who has significant experience, accomplishment and skill. Usually objective statement is for recent graduates or entry-level job seekers.

4. Professional Profile

[Briefly describe your best Professional Background and Education relevant to the position.]

  • [Relevant Skill]
  • [Relevant Skill]

In general, we do not including professional profile and summary sections at the same time. But professional profile can be including along with objective statement.

Professional Profile Example:

  • Over 5 years information system management experience, including customer requirement and specifications analysis, developing matching functional systems and applications.
  • First-hand experience with company projects in the selection, delivery and management of new technology.
  • Adept in planning, organizing, leading, controlling and evaluation.

5. Experience

[Job Title]

[Company Name], [City, ST], [Dates of Employment]

  • [Job Responsibility / Achievement]
  • [Job Responsibility / Achievement]
  • …

Experience/Professional Experiences/Career Experience is the same. This part is focusing on work experience including both responsibility and achievement. List most recent work experiences at the top. Experience section is the most important part of your resume because it will show the potential employers on the most significant qualifications.

Example:

e-Business Manager

ABCD Software Inc., Los Angeles, CA 2007 – Present

  • Currently in a project management role developing and maintaining e-commerce websites for clients around the world.
  • Responsible for helping define, plan and create online marketing campaigns.
  • iSoftwareReview the software reviews website that was developed as a content specialist website.
  • Deliver fast service to meet customer satisfaction and fulfill their expectation.

6. Skills

[Professional or Technical Skill]
[Professional or Technical Skill]

You can list all your skills including leadership, team building, language skill, computer skills and so on. Just keep it relevant to .

Computer Skill Listing Example:

Operating Systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Unix, DOS, Linux, Mac OS X.
Programming Languages: Visual Basic, Visual C++, ASP, JavaScript, HTML, PHP and Action Script.
Databases: Oracle, SQL, MS SQL Server, MS Access 2007, MySQL.
Applications: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver.
Typing Speed: 80 WPM.

7. Education

[School Name], [City, ST], [Date of Graduation]
[Degree obtained]

List your education in reverse chronological order beginning with the most recent. As a recent graduate, Education section maybe the most important section in your resume. But if you have work experiences, Education is the secondary.

Example:

XYZ University, Los Angeles, CA 2000
Master of Information Technology

8. Training and Workshop

  • [Training/ Workshop Title], [Content]
  • [Training/ Workshop Title], [Content]

You can list the training you have received, workshops you have participated as well as the seminars you have attended. You can combine this section with Education if you have only few of them. And change the heading to Education and Training.

Example:

  • Courses in Operating Management
  • Business Leadership Seminar Series
  • Future of Online Business Workshop

9. Licenses and Certification

[Licenses/Certification Title], [Date]

License, certification or accreditation is normally a requirement for some professions like teaching, finance, accounting, engineering, counseling and real estate.

Example:

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), 2008
  • Certified Meeting Professional (CMP), 2007
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), 2005

10. Honors and Awards

[Honors/Awards Title], [Date]

List of all award you received including educational award. It is the proof that other people recognized your accomplishments and achievements.

Example:

  • National Medal of Technology, 2009
  • Outstanding Performance Award, 2005

11. Publication

[Publication Title], [Date]

List all relevant publication including books, articles, stories or software. This section is especially valuable for professions in education, medicine, publishing, journalism and law. Do not list publications that do not support your career objective on your resume; while they may be helpful to mention to your potential employer via a cover letter.

Example:

  • Future of E-Business Technology, 2008
  • Business Management in Modern Technology, 2007

12. Volunteer Experience

[Job Title]
[Organization Name], [City, ST], [Dates]

  • [Job Responsibility / Achievement]
  • [Job Responsibility / Achievement]

Volunteer Experience is especially value for someone who does not have much work experience such as recent graduated student or people changing careers.

13. Interests

[Briefly list interests or hobbies that may pertain to the type of job you are applying for.]

List activities you enjoy doing in your free time. You should include this section into your resume if your interests related to your job target.

Tips: Do not include interests section in your resume if there is no any relevant interest to the objective.

14. References

References available upon request

This phrase is commonly used. This simply means that you can provide a reference list when potential employer request. You can see more detail on how to list references with downloadable sample.

    A career in financial planning is still lucrative despite the worldwide financial crunch. As long as money is used in our economy financial planners will be needed. You have to pay your dues to become a financial planner but once you pass the test and prove your mettle, you can expect a handsome return for your efforts.
